Project Guardian Rural Mental Health Camps Training of Health Workers
The Seven Whys of Project Guardian
Question 1    Personal Identity Card
Our children do get the school Identity cards, so what is different about PROJECT                     GUARDIAN I D card?

Answer          The Project Guardian ID card is unique and different in itself in quite a number of ways. It is designed to give medical details pertaining to the child and is so precise in contents that in case of emergencies it helps to lay down the basis of treatment and more over, even helps to take instant decision in case of accidents. The features of the card to be noticed and kept in mind are:

  • Contains the blood group and Rh factor of the child
  • Contains any history of chronic illnesses, which the child may be suffering from.
  • Contains any history of chronic medication, which the child may be taking.
  • Contains any history of allergies pertaining to drugs or other general allergies.
  • Contains details of  the family physicians timing and address.

Question 2.     Six monthly health checkup
Why is a periodic complete health checkup necessary, when my child
                       seems
absolutely okay?

Answer          Good health of a person is defined from the wellness, physical as well as mental, most of the times us adults too end up being victims of our ignorance. We tend to take our persistent pains and itches non-seriously and thus end up complicating simple problems. But then come to think of it we are at-least big enough to express our discomfort, our little ones generally are not able to understand and express themselves properly. Result……

  • that pain in the head which came of and on if diagnosed on time would have saved the child from getting heavy power glasses.
  • Those white patches and discoloration of the skin would have revealed that the child suffers from severe vitamin deficiency, ignored it causes weakening of bones, eyes, immunity and night blindness.

…….And so many other symptoms that wouldn’t escape a doctor’s eye, but may go ignored by us result in serious conditions later on.

The health check up which is done by competent and professional experts in the field is conducted regularly every six months in the concerned school and the children undergo a complete examination to enable us to find out in their very primary stage and suggest treatment of the same. Many illness which may prove fatal like anemia and hypertension, and other which are highly contagious like scabies worms etc. are eradicated from the root and in the very beginning before they happen to do much harm.

The another very important aspect of the check up is that it is well documented and copies of the details are given to school authorities as well as the parents so that together we can know.

Question 3.    Blood Group & Rh Factor
Why do we have to get the blood group and Rh done when my child has not been
diagnosed to get such a test done?

Answer          Blood group and Rh factor are the basic knowledge, which us as Parents should be having about our child. But how many of us in any case can say what blood group our child belongs to? Now think of an absolute emergency? That is why the project guardian card contains details of the blood type of your child to help the child in absolute distress, in case of an accident, when strangers are trying to help him out. Accident happen without telling and vital information like the blood type of the person involved helps a lot and makes things easier.

Question 4.     Ambulance/Medi-claim
Why do we need an ambulance for the school?

Why medi-claim of such a small child, it seems like good money stuck up
 in
                      bad investment?

Answer     Yeah! Think twice. Here’s a story. Sudipto was in class 4 at that time. A very naughty 9 year old who just couldn’t be controlled. The pranks that he kept playing on others were beyond anybody’s comprehension but he compensated by being good at his studies(like any other average kid). His parents were both working parents. And suddenly one day at school during recess, while having an argument with his classmate over who will ride the slide first, Sudipto was pushed down by the other kid. He hit the bricks bordering the sand enclosure and had a bad looking head injury. The child who had hit him was scared and ran-off. A couple of minutes later other children noticed the unconscious child and went in search of the class teacher the class teacher was also having her lunch so she packed everything off and then proceeded to the principals room to get the first aid box. The child is still bleeding, and the teacher finds that her efforts are not helping. She then runs to the principal who takes out a big khata in which the details of the child are given she looks for class 4 section and then she finds Sudipto’s parents residence and calls up home. But there is nobody home because both the parents had gone to their work place. Somehow the principal was able to determine the child’s father’s office number. All this time, though the child is bleeding and still unconscious. The child’s father has at that moment left the office so the principal left a message and decided to take things in her own hand’s. She sends the office boy to get the taxi. Ramu, the office boy did not find a taxi at the school gate. So he strolls down to the next block stands smoking till a taxi comes along, but it won’t go to public hospital. So he waits for the next taxi and all that time the child is still lying their bleeding and unconscious. The taxi somehow arrives and the child is taken to the public hospital. Then another conflict arrives that was between the school authorities and the father of the child. Father’s contention was that his child should have been admitted to an expensive nursing home and not some dingy hospital. The school authorities were right in saying, how were they to know the father could afford the nursing home. And so they did the next best thing. These are the situations where the importance of project guardian is accentuated. We help in many ways viz.  :

  • The driver of the ambulance which project guardian provides to the school, carry pager and can be contacted at all times during the school hours.

  • The medi claim gives the school authorities the reassurance that even if the parents are not well off the child will be guaranteed treatment to the extent that he is covered under the claim.

  • The parents too can be reassured that even if they are not able to reach their child on time, they have ensured his/her safety through the medi claim & the Project Guardian.

Question 5.      Tele- counselling services
Why does I or my child require tele-counselling at all?

Answer        Tele counselling services are provided to children and parents alike by professionally trained counsellors who happen to be great listeners too. Here is how they solves your problems:

  • These counsellors are there when the child finds it hard to adjust with the expectations people have from him. In the extremely competitive world we do drive our children too hard, sometimes bruising their souls irreparably this leads to serious behavioural problems.

  • Though we do not accept this, but every time some head line in the news paper declares suicide committed by a child, due to fear of results of an exam, or the exam itself, or due to some parental scolding, we are forced to think how well do we actually know our own children. The young call this the generation gap. We can seek help in this regard from these counsellors.

  • The child before coming to suicide as the answer to his problems, seeks someone to talk to. Some body who will tell him that no problem in the world is so un-surmountable that the only solution is suicide. This is where the counsellors help. In conditions of complete anonymity the child can dial the number and talk his heart out. It has been seen that due to the kind of extremely sensitive relation between parents and children’s, the child is scared to go to the parent seeking help. The counsellors help these children in distress.

  • There are so many such cases that can be sited pertaining to examination phobias parental rebuke etc. that there is no denying the fact the counsellors have an important role.

Question 6.       Optional Psychometry
Why do we need to get psychometry done of our child?

Answer                  Psychometry is an optional test. It is done if the child shows behavioural disorders or neurotic traits. The test is recommended only after thorough examination and observation of the child in question, by professional psychologists. The I.Q., aptitude etc. of the child is tested in the process.

Question 7.       Health Magazine and first aid classes

Answer                  The interactive health magazine is designed so as to give the young inquisitive minds a platform to interact and discuss their confusions. The articles are written by children (published with their photos), on health related topics, so as to encourage them and make them more confident at the same time addressing their problems. The articles are however further edited by doctors in the related fields.

First Aid classes are given to teacher’s parents and most of all to children so as to equip them with enough knowledge to react in emergencies. First aid maneuvers are things, which should be made compulsory study for every body, because like we said earlier accidents happen without telling, we don’t know when this knowledge of ours will come in use but when it does we would have most probably helped in saving someone’s life.
