What is NIBS?

National Institute of Behavioural Sciences is a voluntary organization (NGO), registered under the West Bengal societies registration act 1961 since 1989. We are involved in various health related activities pertaining to both psychological as well as physical.

     Outdoor Clinic at Bidhan Nagar Sub Divisional Hospital Clippings


Yet another achievement for NIBS to run independently an outdoor mental health care services at the Bidhan Nagar Sub Divisional Hospital at Salt Lake. This is for the first time that Government has entrusted an NGO to run outdoor clinic at the government hospital.

It was Dr. Kedar Ranjan Banerjee, Secretary NIBS who has been insisting on the Government of West Bengal for spreading mental health awareness and concentrate more on mental health services which has been lacking in the state.


It was Dr. Surya Kanta Mishra, Honourable Health Minister of West Bengal and Mr. Ashim Barman, IAS, Secretary Department of Health, Government of West Bengal who stood by NIBS and recognized the sincere effort for mental health care of mass.

The Out door services was inaugurated by the health minister himself on 18th January, 2003 at the hospital premises in presence of the distinguished personalities, Hospital authorities, friends of NIBS and the patients.


A portion of Bidhan Nagar Sub Divisional Hospital was allotted to NIBS to run regular mental health care services independently. In his speech, the minister appreciated the gesture of NIBS and assured to consider the proposal of NIBS for running the school children health care service that NIBS has named as "Project Guardian".

The mental health care outdoor service, first of its kind in the state shall render services to the people of in and around Salt Lake and shall be equipped with Psychiatrists, Psychologists, General Physicians and Para Medical Team.


In his speech, Dr. Banerjee, Secretary NIBS said that NIBS did not want to confine its services in the area of psychiatry alone, but wanted to establish this clinic as a behaviroural therapy center. Along with psychiatrists and Psychologists, specialists for mentally retarded persons and special educators will attend the Out Door Clinic. Primarily, Consultants of NIBS will attend to the patients from Monday to Saturday during the outdoor timings of the hospital. medicines will be given to the patients free of costs, as practised in other outdoor departments of a government hospital.
